An Introduction to
Speech Contest
Speech
contest is a kind of individual competition where the participants convey their
own original speech according to the theme provided by the committees. Speech
Contest is purposed to encourage the participants in improving their public
speaking skill and also to gain an inspiring experience through participating
in it.
The Assessment Criteria
The assessment is
based on six categories:
Ø Speech
Development
This is the way how the content of the
speech is developed, the cohesion and coherence of the whole speech.
Ø Effectiveness
It is how effective the use of the words,
grammar and structures of the speech as well as gesture in delivering the
message of the speech to the audiences.
Ø Speech
Value
It refers to the value or the lesson provided
explicitly or implicitly in the speech.
Ø Physical
Appearance
It is related to what you wear during
delivering the speech, how neat and tidy you are.
Ø Voice
Voice refers to the clarity of your speech,
intonation and volume.
Ø Manner
Manner is the way how you deliver the
speech, politeness.
Ø Appropriateness
and Correctness
These refer to the appropriate and correct
word choice and grammar used in the speech.
Argumentation in
Writing a Speech
Ø Assertion
The statement
you give about the theme or topic of the speech.
Ø Reasoning
The core logics you
provide for your assertion.
Ø Evidence
You introduce
one or two examples as demonstration for your logics in practice. The examples
may be real, or they may be in the form of an analogy. In the context of a speech,
examples are important element of an argument. They don’t really mean without
the evidences.
Ø Link
Back
You link your arguments
back to whatever the overarching theme of your case is (i.e.: the bigger
picture in which your argument is merely trying to convey). Links are important
to make your arguments united as an integrated part.
Here is a simple
example of an argumentation in a speech:
Assertion: We must master English because English is an
international language.
Reasoning: English is an international language. It is used
by most people all around the world. It also becomes the introductory language
for accessing books, research journals, information, technology and many more. Mastering
an international language gives us a great opportunity to play our roles in
globalization era.
Example: The best example for this is Dr. Dzakir Naik. By
mastering English as an international language, he succeeded to preach Islam to
people around the world.
Link: Therefore, we must master English language.
That’s a full argument right there. And you realize now, writing this,
that AREL’s also probably why you sound be more intelligent in writing than
when you do speaking: my writing forces me to lay out my thoughts in a rough
AREL form. And that’s a good thing.
As for our startup-related problem: an argument on accepting features,
say, should sound like this:
“I think the best way to respond to a feature request is to ask ‘why?’
or 'what do you really want?’” (Assertion) “It’s important to get the features
right - if we don’t get them right, or we add something that we regret later,
there’s no way of retracting a feature without making our users angry. So we
have to be careful. What that really means is getting to the root cause of what
they want.” (Logic) “Sometimes, when a user says that he wants X, what he
really means is that he wants something else, but he doesn’t know how to
communicate that to you because he has never thought in terms of product
design. So what happens is that he’s seen Feature X somewhere and thinks this
would solve his problem. Whereas it’s a better idea for us to ask him what he
really wants, and then figure out if Feature X is the best way of solving his
real need. Or if there’s a better way, or a simpler one.” (Example). “That way
we won’t do any features we regret, and we’ll still please our users in new
ways.” (Link).
